You Still Do It On a Towel.

You have a specific towel for this.

It is not one of the good ones. It is older, or it came free with something. It lives somewhere guests will not see it. It comes out when the evening starts heading a certain way, and afterwards it goes straight in the wash. If it is not clean next time, you use the second best one.

Nothing about that is stupid. It is what almost everyone does. But think back to the very first time. Did you compare anything? Did you look anything up? Or did one of you just get up and grab the nearest thing?

That decision took about four seconds. It has been running your bedroom ever since.

The second towel never worked either, and there is a reason.

A towel is a sponge. That is the entire design. It is built to take liquid in and hold it, and holding is not the same as blocking. A sponge that is full gives liquid back the moment you press on it, and two bodies are exactly that.

So it goes into the towel, spreads sideways through the fibres, reaches the edge, and carries on into the sheet. The towel is still lying where you put it. The mattress is wet anyway. Adding a second one doubles how much it holds. It does not change what it does.

Then you buy something waterproof, and it still comes through.

This is the part almost nobody knows. Water is unusual. It has very high surface tension, which is why it beads up and rolls off a treated surface instead of soaking in. Most waterproof fabrics are built around that property, and the standard industry test measures it. The test is run with water. That is literally why it is called a water column test.

Water beads. Almost nothing that ends up in your bed does.

Lube, body fluids, sweat, massage oil. Every one of them has lower surface tension than water. They do not bead. They spread, wet the fibre, and find any gap the water never found. A surface coating can pass a lab test and still fail in a bedroom.

So when someone buys a cheap waterproof throw, uses it once with a lot of lube, and finds a damp patch underneath, they assume they got a bad one. They did not. They got one built and tested for the wrong liquid. That is why the Love Blanket Pro uses a bonded membrane instead. A coating asks liquid to roll off. A membrane does not ask anything. There is no route through it, and it does not care which liquid is on top.

If you squirt, this is a capacity problem.

It arrives all at once, in one place, under the weight of two people. A bath towel holds a surprisingly small amount before it is full, and a full towel under pressure does not hold politely. It hands the liquid straight to the sheet.

A quarter of the people we asked have soaked through more than one towel in a single session. Nobody who has done that once believes a third towel would have fixed it.

If you use a lot of lube, it is the opposite problem.

Lube is not absorbed the way water is. Silicone-based lube in particular sits on top of the fibre, spreads across the surface, and travels. The towel does not soak it up. It just makes the towel slide, which is the last thing anyone wants mid-position.

Anal sex makes this worse for an obvious reason: far more lube, reapplied, over a much longer stretch of time. A membrane does not care. There is nothing for the lube to wick into and nowhere for it to go but sideways across a surface you can wipe.

The one that actually gets used is the one that never leaves the bed.

Waterproof pads from the medical aisle genuinely work. They also announce themselves. They crinkle, they look like what they are, and they end up in a drawer, which means they are never on the bed at the moment you need them.

Nearly one in ten people we asked said they had looked at waterproof blankets before and found them cheap or medical looking.
